Horoki.

22 07 2009

In Cantonese we have the saying “yow peng, yow hou sik” which basically translates to “cheap and tasty”. Such a statement certainly applies to my absolute favourite ‘cheap-eats’ restaurant in Melbourne Horoki! Like all Melbournian goodies, Horoki is located in a small lane-way in the city. Serving up modern Japanese tapas-style dishes, Horoki is a great place for a quick and easy lunch.
For lunch they offer a great lunch platter for a mere $14 where you can pick 3 dishes from the menu, served with your choice of either ciabatta or rice. Today I had kingfish sashimi,

salmon and spinach croquette…

And on the other side of the table: tatsuta age; crispy marinated chicken, fish and calamari fritto; deep fried king dory and calamari dressed with Japanese breadcrumbs and tartar, Horoki braised hamburg steak; hamburger steak braised in rich tomato sauce and cream served with potatoes and broccoli.

Oh and not to forget, Horoki serve their organic green tea in the cutest tea cups!

Sarti.

9 07 2009

One of my favourite little Italian restaurants in the city is Sarti. With an amazing rooftop terrace that overlooks the CBD and warm, contemporary interiors, this places dishes up some pretty amazing modern Italian cuisine. One of my favourite things about this restaurant is their ‘stuzzichini’ (small Italian appetizers) menu.

“Sarti is a modern Italian eatery where you can enjoy the time-honoured traditions of Italian cuisine without the clichés. With a contemporary focus on food and style, Sarti is the ideal showcase for chef, Riccardo Momesso’s creativity, passion and commitment to quality. Enjoy his innovative interpretations of classics as well as unique, signature dishes.”

For lunch today I had…

Tataki of kingfish, rocket puree, candied black olive, ginger & flying fish roe…

Tartare of wagyu beef ‘aceto di porcini’ trompette di mort, olive oil powder…
